Sometimes I get asked the strangest questions. One I was recently asked is, "Isn't there anything material you want?" I actually thought about it. I could give one of three answers...like the wedding ring I had finally agreed to wear...except that was an emotional gift, not a material gift. Or...the person I've waited all my life for...same scenario, I believe. How about, help with remodeling my house? Is that material?
I honestly cannot think of anything material I want at all. What I want, I buy for myself. My family tells me I am the hardest person on earth to shop for. Okay. But I think you make it hard. I am happy with anything you give me...but I'd really rather not have things. I'd rather have you.
The greatest gifts I've ever been given are poems written to me by someone I loved, a picture Carolyn drew for me, a spice rack my dear friend Charlie made for me, the trees Kelly has planted in the forest in my name, the beautiful love songs Jeff wrote to me, the fairy painting my sister commissioned for me, a couple of photographs by Cat...gifts of themselves; gifts of their hearts.
I'm not rich. There are lots of things I'll never have. There are lots of things I'll never need. I don't need fancy, expensive THINGS to tell me you care. You do that with your existence in my life. If you want to give me a gift that will always be valued dearly, give me something of who you are. Give me a letter telling me how I impact your life. Give me a piece of your heart. Give me a ridiculously silly gift that you made yourself. Give me you.
So...now I'm curious. What's the best gift you've ever been given...and why was it special to you?

Lots of very special gifts here
My son made a wooden bookshelf for me when he was in boarding school.
He also carved Happy Mothers day on a big piece of wood
My daughter made me a necklace out of rolled Newspaper cuttings, which she then painted in all the jewel colours. She also carved a Happy Mothers day on a piece of heavy silver.
My best friend made a birthday card for me out of spices (cinnamon, cardamon, cloves, bay leaves, etc.) many years ago, which I still treasure and keep in my wooden treasure box (which again was made by my son).
I always taught my children that Anyone can Buy a Present ... but not everyone can Make one.
Today, I still give my children and friends jewelry that I made and created ... something no one else has, and it's specially made with their Birthstones.
I love giving presents

Wow! I love this comment, Renee. A woman after my own heart. It's so special when it comes from the heart...and not the pocketook. Great gifts. I'd hang on to them forever as well. And what a place to keep them.

The many gifts that I treasure are those from God. Each and every one of my children in all their special ways and all of my true friends brought to me in some very interesting ways. And for you, my long-lost sister who I am very grateful to have met and treasure for all eternity! Material presents are nice but its really what's in the heart and soul that matters the most. Love Ya Sis!

Becc, you have no idea how much I needed to hear that tonight. As with you, I am so grateful for your family...for every minute of love and joy you all share with me. For the opportunity to be an aunt to the girls...and a sister to you and Dorian... You are lights illuminating the path I walk on....and always will be. I love you guys.

i've always preferred personalized gifts, too. the best gift i received this year was a home-made video for my birthday (of course, i asked for it haha) from a loved one. i wanted it more than the mug or box of soap he would've have thought of
"...paint paradise, then in you go..."
